The Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage is a very important year in your child’s education. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is divided into seven areas.
Three prime areas:
Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical development, Communication and Language.
Four specific areas:
Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design.
We continually assess children’s learning and development and each child has a learning diary.
Phonics and Reading Scheme
At Worle Village, we use the Unlocking Letters and Sounds program, supported by the use of kinaesthetic actions as a basis for the planning of our high quality, systematic phonics programme.
Children begin their phonics journey in the first term of Reception and children make rapid progress in their reading journey.
As children move through the early stages of acquiring phonics, they practise by reading phonetically decodable texts which are very closely matched to a child’s current phonics phase so that each child can achieve success in their reading.
Once children have a secure knowledge of letter/sound correspondences and can blend words confidently, they access our book banded reading scheme which has a wide variety of books accessible for children as they develop through fluency and maturity. This is designed to give children experience of a variety of reading genres. There are fiction and non-fiction books within each level.
All children are encouraged to select books from the classroom, library or home to share with their parents to encourage a love of reading.
The school has high expectations for pupils to read at home. We ask that a child reads at home a minimum of five times per week in KS1.
We try to do as much as we can to establish good working relationships between home and school so we can all work together to raise all pupils standards.
Current Topic
Me And My Historic Town
For our first term in the EYFS we will be focusing on getting to know each other, class routines and rules.
Our first topic we will be embarking on is a History and Geography based topic which allows us to learn all about each other and where we live.
The children will be given lots of opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills to encourage them to express themselves. It is important to us as a mixed EYFS and Year one year group to nurture a high level of learning and understanding throughout all areas of the curriculum.
Please see our detailed topic web on our class page below.
Continuous provision
We have a great outdoor space and it is designated to our EYFS to use. We plan an extensive curriculum, based on continuous provision to provide opportunities for the children to learn through each of the seven areas of learning which are; Communication and language, Maths, Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical development, literacy, Expressive Arts and Design and Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
Helicopter Stories
In the EYFS and KS1 we have had the opportunity to take part in a new way of creative learning through Helicopter Stories.
This is where the children tell their own stories and use their expressive characters to act out the story. This has helped the children to become confident, expressive and write their own interactive exciting stories. This is a task that is strongly part of our routine each week.
PE
We have at least two PE lessons per week. Please ensure your child's kit is in school at all times to enable us to be flexible.
We do PE in all types of weather so please ensure your child has suitable PE kit. In the Summer months we recommend shorts and t-shirt and in the winter long trousers with t-shirt and hoodie. Trainers or daps should be worn.
All kit should be clearly labelled with your child's name.
An example of our kit, which can be purchased from NK Sports, is below or your child needs a plain white t-shirt and black shorts.
Snacks and Drinks
Your child should bring, every day, to school a named water bottle which they will have access to during the day.
If you child is under five years old milk will be provided, by the school, for break time. Over five's can still have milk but this needs to be ordered by completing a form, available from the office, and ordered through School Milk Service.
Fruit is provided by the school for the children to eat during break time.
