Reading in Year 1 and Year 2
At our school, we believe reading is a vital life skill and the foundation for all learning. In Year 1 and Year 2, we build on the strong early reading foundations developed in EYFS, supporting children to become confident, fluent readers who enjoy books and understand what they read.
We place a strong emphasis on phonics, language development and comprehension, alongside fostering a love of stories, information texts and reading for pleasure.
Reading in Year 1
In Year 1, children continue to develop their phonics knowledge and begin to read with increasing fluency and confidence.
They are supported to:
❇️ Apply phonics knowledge to read unfamiliar words
❇️ Read common exception (tricky) words
❇️ Read aloud with growing fluency and expression
❇️ Talk about texts they have read, including characters, settings and events
❇️ Make simple predictions and begin to infer meaning
Reading in Year 1 includes:
❇️ Daily systematic phonics lessons
❇️ Whole-class reading sessions
❇️ Small-group guided reading for targeted support
❇️ Regular opportunities for independent reading
Reading in Year 2
In Year 2, children build on their decoding skills to develop greater fluency, understanding and independence as readers.
They are supported to:
❇️ Read age-appropriate texts with confidence and accuracy
❇️ Use phonics knowledge and sight vocabulary effectively
❇️ Read with expression and awareness of punctuation
❇️ Answer questions about what they have read
❇️ Make predictions, inferences and connections within texts
❇️ Discuss vocabulary and explain the meaning of words
Reading in Year 2 includes:
❇️ Continued phonics and spelling support where needed
❇️ Whole-class reading lessons focused on comprehension
❇️ Guided reading sessions to support and challenge learners
❇️ Independent reading to build stamina and enjoyment
Reading at Home
Reading at home plays an essential role in supporting children’s progress throughout Key Stage 1. We encourage families to:
❇️ Read regularly with their child
❇️ Talk about stories, characters and new vocabulary
❇️ Ask questions and encourage children to explain their thinking
❇️ Celebrate effort as well as progress
These shared experiences help develop fluency, comprehension, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.

Flamingo Class School Day
Our school day starts at 8:50am.
Please make sure your child brings a coat every day, as we enjoy getting outside for physical activity daily – whatever the weather!
PE kits are brought into school at the start of each term and sent home again at the end of each term, ensuring children always have their kit available for PE lessons.
We take part in PE in all kinds of weather, so please ensure your child has suitable PE clothing to stay comfortable and active.
