Show Racism The Red Card
This week's assemblies covered the important, but sensitive topic of racism. We explored what racism was, defining it as 'treating somebody different because of the colour of their skin, their language (or accent), the country they come from, or their culture'.
We talked about the difference between being 'not racist', and being 'anti-racist' - where we calmly and respectfully say when something is not right. Some children said that telling someone suffering from racist abuse 'not to worry' or that 'everything will be alright' might fix things, and we challenged this. Unfortunately, that is simply not enough - and that it is the responsibility of all members of society to stand up when we see something inappropriate and challenge it.
In KS1, we used the story 'All Are Welcome' and in KS2, we read the poem 'The British' by Benjamin Zephaniah.
